Please answer.

What is the name for a popular flat, thin cornmeal pancake?
i don't know what it is in spanish....

I have heard it called a Johnny Cake..

I just looked it up online the answer she is looking for is tortilla
Reply:In the south, corn meal mush baked into cakes or loaves are called hoe cake and more popularly, "Johnny Cake" which some suggest was because it was the most common food available and consumed by the "Johnny Rebs" (Rebels) during the civil war between the north and south.

What you are referring to as having a Mexican origin is a tortilla which can be made from flower or cornmeal and called accordingly "flour tortilla" or "corn tortilla". The "cakes" from the states are much thicker and more like cornbread or corn muffins in consistency whereas the tortilla is about as flat is it can be made and still be able to stay together long enough to wrap around some tasty ingredients to make tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc.
Reply:I don't know about the spanish version, but in the South they are called hoe cakes
