Why is Norton such a popular village name in Britain?

and is it the most common?

Why is Norton such a popular village name in Britain?
Norton? That's where my Auntie Virus lives!!

...God, I'm SO sorry about that!!
Reply:it is a variation on New Town so any new towns or villages used it
Reply:It's usually a corruption of 'north ton' ('ton' being a small settlement or farmstead). For the same reason, Sutton, Weston and Easton are quite common names too.
Reply:I think it originates from North Town, or Tun so it would originally refer to a settlement to the north of a locality. There are other variations such as Norbiton (as opposed to Surbiton). Also Northampton. Sutton is also a common name and would refer to a southerly location.
