Can you name me a popular book in which a person lets an enemy escape or they become friends?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when they let Sirius escape.

Or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There's many places. The mutual respect shown between Draco and Harry in the epilogue (not to mention when Harry saved Draco's life). Narcissa saving Harry by not telling Voldemort that he was still alive.

I remember this book: "War of the Buttons". It also has a movie version. It's really a wonderful novel. And of course who could forget the book: "Treasure Planet", another one is "Zathura". Believe it or not this two movies was just based on book. It was awesome to read this books.
Reply:Lord of the Rings

Frodo lets Gollum escape more than once

And in his own way, Smeagol and Frodo have a certain sort of shaky friendship based on their mutual understanding of the burden of the Ring.
Reply:the movie Enemy Mine with Dennis Quaid and Lou Gossett Jr. has this theme. they crash land together and becomes friends after the realize they need each other to survive.

and doesn't this happen in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where Sirius Black winds up becoming friends with Harry after he escapes but it's not because he's allowed to escape?

In Les Miserables Inspector Javert lets the hero go but he kills himself at the end instead of becoming friends with him.

so one movie, one book and one play that deal with either is the best I could think of. I don't there's been anybook that has both.
